Swansea City : Will Watford prove to be the turning point ? Wednesday, 28th Jan 2026 10:56 by Keith Haynes Swansea City will certainly look to their EFL Championship fixture on Saturday (3pm) Vicarage Road against Watford as the turning point for their poor away form under head coach, Vitor Matos. Just one win away from home signals a degree of concern about this side and its overall character. But we don’t just write a few sentences or words and leave it there, we have to to look deeper. There couldn’t be two more extreme comparisons between Vitor Matos at home compared to away. There’s such a difference it seems incomprehensible that this is the same team. Away from home every game is lost by the odd goal and as we saw on Saturday away at Hull City the team on the pitch do nothing to distance themselves from these statistics. ![]() This has been a Swansea symptom for a few seasons, even last campaign Luke Williams couldnt drag his team to a win suffering in front of goal in games which should have been won, it was the same for Alan Sheehan earlier this season before his total collapse before he was sacked as head coach. It isn’t a mystery, this whole season has been pretty much the same. It is exposed even more by such a glaringly obvious run of results. A team who have the results as above really must be a poor side ? What do you think ? ![]() That’s basically twelve games under Matos in two league tables. Watching these games is even more alarming at times, not least for the amount of chances that are thrown away. We did a piece on the lack of goals from four of the Swans new signings this season earlier this week. It is alarming that Malick Yalcouyé, Cameron Burgess, Melker Widell and Zeidane Inoussa havent scored a league goal between them all season. And just five assists all told. That’s here —> Goals ? What goals ? The question was asked of us last week ‘When does this become a managerial issue and not a player issue’ ? We don’t see it in that way. The reason is simple, the team is set up to go out and create chances to score goals. They do this in every game they play. As Matos says, "For different reasons we have not been able to win some of these away games, but I think we have put in some really good performances. We know, of course, that we need to translate that into points, into wins, and that's what we are looking to do in this next one. The approach is the same, the mentality is the same, it needs to be if you want to be a team that can reach the standards we want. I think that's quite important to have this consistency in terms of behaviour” The reason is every game enough has been approached to win them and take the points. No fixture has been a case of being outdone or outplayed. In every game in a very competitive Championship we see a Swans side which should have won the encounter. Of course they don’t and find themselves in and around mid to low table consistently. It isn’t about new players either, these chances have been made and given up by the same participants on regular occasions away from home. They make the chances they can’t finish off every game away, and just about manage to do so at home. Are we ever to see this change throughout the remainder of this season ? The fire is there, as is the desire, but this really is an issue for Vitor Matos. One which he no doubt will be working on today in training to resolve. That’s his job and that of his coaches. This team has the players, the attitude, the belief and the ability, it’s just a shame they don’t have the psychometrics to bring it all together. Will they though ? It’s games like Watford away this coming Saturday that are the bench test for Swansea City. A team statistically taking their chances better than Swansea City do. A team who rarely get hammered if at all, just the same as Swansea City. And here’s a thing, turn that home form into away form and come May you just never know what will happen. To have a complaint you have to have the facts and the context to make your point known. This website isn’t social media, it is about good honest football writing that invites opinion from adults.
